What's in a name?
Djibouti hasn't always been called Djibouti. It originally started out as the Land of Punt. During that time it was ruled independently by King Parahu and Queen Ati. Although it was ruled independently it was in close relations with Egypt. The name was first changed in 1894 to French Somaliland after signing treaties with France. In 1958 a referendum was held to decide whether to join the Somali Republic or to remain with France. After much discussion it was decided to stay with France. Things remained the same until 1967 when the relationship with France was loosened and the country was renamed Territoire Francais des Afars et des Issas. Finally in 1977 another referendum was held and the country officially became independent and changed it's name to Dijbouti.
